Helping the Community

Wow! Catherine and I are so excited! Rockland's Maison de la Famille has approached us to collaborate with them on a special project for National Child's Day!
On Nov. 21st, we will be setting up at the center, where 25 families will receive a free photo shoot of their sweet angels, and get a print, too!
We feel proud and thankful to be given this opportunity. Both Catherine and I have taken our own children to the family center, so this is very special! To be able to give back to the community is truly something we both hold dear to our hearts.
We are looking forward to working with all those kiddies!

Reaman-Duetta Family

This fall we had the pleasure of photographing this family for their very first Family Portraits! It was so great to be able to do this for them. And then to see all the beautiful portraits that we took.  We know they will treasure them forever.

2 Weeks Later
It always feels so wonderful to see looks of delight and surprise from our clients as they view their images for the first time.
When you hear a mom say she might need Kleenex, you know you've reached your goal! You've created portraits that evoke emotions. Made us need Kleenex too.

Back To School!

Did you get you child's school pictures back? Excited? Looking for something a little... different? We're having our Back to School Promo on for one more day this Friday! Book your session now and get school pics to remember!

Road Trip!!!!

Is there anything better then taking a road trip with your family? Do you remember road trips from when you were a kid?

We're getting ready to take one all the way to Nova Scotia to see our wonderful family and have a bit of fun! But sometimes the drive out is not so fun....

"Are we there yet?"
"I have to go pee!"
"I'm hungry!"
"Why are we doing this anyways?"

And on and on and ON......

Well this trip I promised myself would be different! I am making my 7 going on 17 year old boy a bin that will definitely keep him entertained!

On the lid I will glue a flat large piece of Lego.... So inside the box will be some Lego of course!  Maybe a surprise kit as well.  Something that goes with our trip, sea animals, boats.... will figure that one out tomorrow!

He will also be able to use the lid to colour his colouring books, or play some of the other games.

Here is a wonderful site chalked full of fantastic games to play:

http://www.momsminivan.com/index.html

We want to buy Battleship for Nicholas to play, but as a trial, we are going to try the printable version.  In addition there is always good old Car Bingo! Plus I plan on printing out maps of where we are going and getting him a compass to learn how to navigate our way.

If all this fails I will have a few more ideas up my sleeve that I have found on Pinterest.  If you decide to search Pinterest, be careful not to get lost!

I hope this gives you ideas on how to enjoy your road trips (short or long).

See you all soon!

THE SECRET & AWESOME FEATURES OF YOUR I-PHONE CAMERA

Your I-phone is with you at all times, right? It’s like your right hand — always there, always ready to help you muddle your way through the day and kill boredom when the need arises. But that phone of yours can be oh-so-frustrating when your darling child chooses a particular moment to do something photo-worthy and your phone chooses that time to revolt.

Well, when you learn the inner and secret features of your I-phone camera, your days of being “slow on the draw” will be over. On top of that, your camera skills will improve 10-fold and your images will too, making your memories print and wall worthy.

So let’s look at some of the tricks and features inside your I-phone that will make you shine at the next family get together!

Open your camera app FAST

Don’t miss ANY moment. To get to your camera lickety-split do one of two things depending on if your iPhone is locked or not.

            LOCKED:

                        1. Hit the home button

                        2. Locate the camera icon on the lower right corner of the screen.

                        3. Swipe up & the camera will open.

            UNLOCKED:

                        1. Swipe Up

                        2. Tap the camera icon & the camera will open.

Turn on your grid

Activating the grid will place a “tick-tac-toe” box on your screen as you shoot. What’s the benefit? Where the lines cross is called a “power point.” When you place your subject on of the four points you create images with a little negative space and better, more artistic composition. A little pro tip that will make your images that much prettier!

            TO ACTIVATE:

                        1. Go to Settings > Photos&Camera > Grid > Turn it On

Adjust Exposure and focus at your will

Professional photographer know light like the back of your hand, and every lighting situation poses different issues, especially of you camera. A camera cannot see light and adjust the way the human eye can. So, it’s important to be able to tell your camera how to behave when you need it to in order to get a good “exposure.” The classic scenario that may drive you crazy is shooting a darker subject on a bright background. Your camera will want to make the background look good and your subject will be dark and ugly! ARGH! The way mourn this? Use the hidden feature in your iPhone that lets YOU control how bright an image is.

            CUSTOM SET YOUR EXPOSURE

                        1. Ope the camera

                        2. Compose your shot

                        3. Tap and HOLD on the screen where you want to focus. The yellow box will blink and set focus.

                        4.  Swipe up or down to make the camera brighten or darken the exposure

                        5. When you’re happy with how it looks, take the shot!

Turn off your Auto Flash

Flash from your camera almost never looks good. It produces a harsh, flat light that doesn’t always need to be there, yet the camera seems to want to use it all the time. Turn it off when you can for more pleasing light in your images.

            TURN OFF YOUR FLASH

1.In the camera app, tap the lighting bolt icon in the upper left corner.

                        2. Choose and tap “Off.”

                        3. Shoot as you like!

Use Burst Mode For Fast Action

Did you know your I-phone can shoot 10 frames per second in burst mode? WHAT? My iPhone has burst mode? Yes it does! And it’s great for catching your toddler on the run.

            TO ACTIVATE:

                        1. Press and HOLD the shutter release button on your camera app.

                        2. Voila! 10 frames per second.

Edit like a pro

Taking the picture is just half the process in the Pro world. Editing and enhancing the image is 50% of the process. Yes, even when you shoot with your I-phone you can make your images stand out even more by using a good editing app.

What you don't see...

My job is to create images for you that are not only beautiful, but will last a lifetime. A LIFETIME!!!!

Talk about pressure!

Not only that, but I need to make it so it suits your family, your style, your home, your LIFE!

Am I shooting for a book or wall portraits or both? Where are you hanging the portraits? What colours are in that room what style is your devote (rustic, modern etc etc etc!)? So many things I have to think about!

That's the reason for a consultation! We sit and talk and figure out what you want so I can plan the session that you want.

Now after our chat is done I hit the drawing board. I figure out poses, the set, groupings, how I'm taking your image (landscape vs portrait).
After all that it's time to set it all up! Then the magic happens when you arrive...

Phew! That's done....oh wait! I still have to cull and edit! Oh yeah and that book has to be designed doesn't it! Don't forget the slide show! There's also converting to black and white so you can choose which you prefer.... Ok hours have passed and this is all finally done!

Now prepare everything for the ordering session... Clean everything (that means putting everything away from the session that was just here). Set up for the ordering / reveal appointment. Make sure there is water bottles in the fridge! Check all documents are ready to go. And we're off!

One more step done! Next make any changes we discussed then prep all the files to send off to the lab. That means finalizing the books as well! And DONE!

Oh wait! I still have to make sure everything is perfect from the lab, which it always is (thank goodness I use an actual lab and not some cheap company that mass produces and doesn't care about your product!). Then package it up and wait for you to pick up! When you arrive, show you everything. Make sure you love it all, then explain some of the little things. Care, cleaning, storage and what those little bumpers are for!

And done! Other then follow ups, blogging, Facebook posts accounting and preparing for the next client.

All that for $60 or $100 or what ever you are paying for your session fee. Worth it or not? For me it is, because the smile on your face when I present you with your order.

Here is my question though... How do other "photographers" manage to provide you all this, plus give you the digital files as your order and still afford a business license, insurance, maintain education, and everything else that goes with running a business for $60? Your $60 for a mini, pays me less then $10 an hour to work (excluding editing and file prep). What I make on your order pays for my time editing, the products and all my other business costs.

So are you going to the Joe-blow down the street who's just doing it to make a buck or are you seeing me who cares and is doing it because it's my passion? I charge for my work because my talent is worth something. I run a legitimate business because you deserve to have someone with true dedication work for you!

Free Portrait Sessions

Thought I was offering one? Sorry no.  Just discussing the value of one.

Let's see - what do you get?
  • A professional photographer taking your picture
  • Usually a Facebook edition, or a 5x7 print or maybe even an 8x10
What do I get:
  • Images that I can use for specific promotions or to refresh my portfolio (but only for a limited time as it has to stay fresh)
What does it "cost" you?
  • Maybe an hour of your time for the session
  • Another hour for the reveal
  • Some time spent communicating with me to figure out what you are to bring
  • If I've missed something please let me know.
What does it "cost" me?
  • A few days of designing the promo
  • A few days for designing the set
  • Time spent planning the session
  • All the time I spend communicating with each person that inquires the details of the offer
  • The time I spend, after confirming participation, discussing what to wear with each person
  • Time spent designing documents to help them figure out what to bring/wear
  • An hour at least pre-shoot to set up
  • Refreshments that I usually provide
  • My shooting time
  • My time spent editing the images (8 hours or more)
  • My time during the reveal to help you choose which you like the most or helping you figure out what you want to order.
  • Preparing the files for your order
  • Packaging and providing care instructions for your products.
  • On top of all this you have the usual costs of running a business
    • rent
    • utilities
    • internet / phone
    • education
    • business license
    • website fee's
    • insurance
    • education
    • equipment
    • did I mention education
    • advertising costs
    • memberships
    • cost of goods sold (COGS) - or in this case possibly given
Now with that laid out there, does it make sense for me to jeopardize my name and my career and my business by using your images in a derogatory manner? Do you think I'm going to choose poor pictures to use in my advertising after all the work I've done to acquire them?

Oh and by the way, all that I do above is done for every client that I have. Now have a look at what I do and what I charge and what I create for you.

ok rant over.

Outing with the Photography Club

Last Sunday I enjoyed time with some of the wonderful photographers from the Clarence Rockland Photography Club.  We went to the Sand Road Maple Farm - which I highly recommend! In addition to a picturesque landscape, we met some wonderful people and I found a new prop (which I'm going back for on Thursday!). #sandroadmaplefarm
